Diagnosing Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia is a pain condition where a person experiences pain over most, if not all, of their body. Each part of the body can feel sore when pressed. But it is not just a pain condition. It can also include tiredness, fatigue, impaired concentration, and memory difficulties. It is often associated with a particularly non-restorative, non-restful sleep pattern.

The most common symptom is widespread pain. People with fibromyalgia may find that trying to do their normal activities increases their pain, meaning they can only do small amounts before needing to rest or lie down. Concentration and memory may also be affected.

Fibromyalgia is slowly being understood. It is thought to be a disorder of the nervous system’s perception of pain, like a thermostat that has been turned too high. It is not a disorder of the body’s muscles or tissues.

Diagnosis first involves ruling out other conditions, such as rheumatological or inflammatory disorders. There is no specific test or scan to confirm fibromyalgia.

If you are living with fibromyalgia, it’s worth speaking to your GP about seeing one of our specialists to discuss treatment options and strategies to manage your pain.
