Medicinal Cannabis and Driving: Key Points from Dr. Russo

13/02/2025

In this video, Dr. Marc Russo explains the legal differences between CBD and THC in medicinal cannabis and what they mean for driving.

In this video, Dr. Marc Russo addresses common questions about medicinal cannabis and driving. He explains the key legal distinctions between CBD oil and THC-containing products, helping patients understand how these regulations impact their daily lives.

CBD oil and driving
CBD oil, a non-psychoactive extract of cannabinol, contains no THC and does not impair cognitive function. As such, it is legal to use while driving or operating heavy machinery in Australia. This makes CBD oil a preferred starting point for pain management, as it eliminates concerns about driving restrictions.

THC products and legal restrictions
Products containing THC, such as THC oil, THC-CBD combinations, or whole flower extracts, are different. THC is psychoactive, and current NSW laws (as of November 2024) prohibit driving after consuming THC products. While there may be legal updates in regions like the ACT, the restrictions in NSW remain unchanged.

Why CBD oil is often recommended first
CBD oil is often trialed first due to its effectiveness in reducing pain without affecting driving abilities. If successful, patients can avoid the need for THC-based treatments and their associated restrictions.

Understanding these distinctions helps patients make informed choices about medicinal cannabis and its use in everyday life.
